Great article. The GlusterFS use of extended attributes is what the SNIA calls “Data System Metadata” that drives the data services as described above. This also matches how the CDMI cloud storage standard uses this metadata as well.

The xattrs themselves don't tell you whether another node crashed; it might still be processing the operation(s) for which the counter increment was done. What the xattrs do is allow the system to take correct action once the crashed/in-progress distinction has been made some other way. This process is described in more detail in a later article.

A very coherent and useful look at the use of xattrs on GlusterFS. I’ve been blindly comparing these xattrs when I have problems – now I begin to understand what and why I am comparing them.
