The GlusterFS use of extended attributes is what the SNIA calls “Data System Metadata” that drives the data services as described above. This also matches how the CDMI cloud storage standard uses this metadata as well.

What the xattrs do is allow the system to take correct action once the crashed/in-progress distinction has been made some other way. This process is described in more detail in a later article.
